A brief history
of
Fellowship of First Fleeters
"To live on in the hearts and minds of descendants is never to die"
- Commenced: Wednesday 27th March, 1968, at AMP Society Auditorium,
AMP building, Circular Quay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
- Founder: Mr John Lavett. Descendant of John Squires and foundation
members of 287 people.
- Vice Presidents: Mr Fredrick Daniels and Mr Stanley Harrison-Powell
- Secretary: Mrs Elizabeth Williams
- Treasurer: Mr Eric Blair
- Committee: Mrs Rosaland Harrison, Mrs Thelma Gay, Mrs Joan Ross,
Mrs Betty Loneragan, Mr Ray Whiting, Mr Dudley Oakes, Mr Bill Evans, Mr John Pitt,
Mr Edgar Kable, Mr Frank Everingham, Mr Des Newell and Mr Ron Nerps.
- Association 1788 - 1820: Started at the same time. The first committee meeting was held at
Aid Retarded Persons office in the AMP building, Circular Quay.
- Starting Projects: - Journals every 3 months for sale and Newsletter every 3 months for
distribution to full financial members. The new flag competition and new anthem competition were aborted
de to unsatisfactory entries.
- 1970: Mr Frank Everingham appointed President. Meeting held at
Hotel, then moved to Mr Everingham's residence. Fleet committee was formed, namely
from membership, editorial and social, a total of 43 out of 800 registered members.
We became deeply involved in 1970 with the Captain Cook Bicentennial Celebrations.
The first Australia Day Dinner was held at the Argyle Tavern. We held two dinners per year.
Bathhampton Appeal - $25,000. Special Australian chapel in St. Nicholls
Church, Bathampton, Bath, England where Governor Phillip is buried. $484 was raised through donations.
Membership Committee met at the Mitchell Library for research in an effort to build up records.
We joined the Royal Australian Historical Society and the Genealogical Society for access to their records and we still have
representatives at their annual conferences.
- 1971: Mr Dudley Oakes, Mr Arthur Ingham-Myer and Mr Jack Luscombe were
appointed Vice- Patrons.
- 1973: Mr Fred Danniels passed away in February 1973 in office. Mr Edgar
Kable was appointed 4th President. With 1788 - 1820 Association, we approached Sydney Cove Development Committee for restoration
of Cadman's Cottage and the naming of First Fleeter Park.
Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW accepts position of Patron. Moved into Assembly Hall.
Mrs Val Ross organised lecture meetings.
Held our first exhibition at the Rocks Anniversary Day.
Mrs Mary Thompson appointed first Life Member.
- 1975: Mrs Beryl Lewis appointed 5th President. Vice Patrons were Mr Douglas Oakes
J. Luscombe and Ald John Harris. Mr Edgar Kable becomes the 2nd Life Member.
There are now over 100 members. We began to ask the Governor of NSW to
our Anniversary Day dinner each year.
- 1976: First Plaque Service for First Fleeter Henry Dodd at
St. John's Cemetery, Parramatta.
- 1977:
Sir Roden Cutler was guest at the Anniversary Dinner, Wentworth Hotel.
Brisbane Water Historical Society present a picture of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove.
E. Kable Dies - New members now 564
- 1978:
Joan Ross is 3rd Life Member and Thelma Gay is 4th Life Member
- 1980:
Contributed to Bonds of Friendship at Circular Quay, unveiling
by Sir Zelman Cown. Also the Tank Stream fountain, Sydney Cove
unveiled by Lord Mayer, Doug Sutherland.
- 1981:
Mary Bailey becomes the 9th Life Member and Naida
Jackson becomes the 6th Life Member.
- 1982:
Tapestry for the new State Library to be 1988 Bi-centennial Project
costing $20.000. Suggested voluntary levy and donations and net profit
from all fund raising functions. - 263 new members.
President Mrs B. Lewis proposed the toast to "Phillip of Australia" in the assembly
hall in Bath, England.
- 1983: Rob Best was appointed 6th President and the new Governor, Sir James Rowland accepts
the appointment of Patron.
Lola Wilkinson becomes 7th Life Member. Postal voting is brought in for Annual Meetings.
Micro Fiche is purchased.
Mrs Thompson and A. Ingham Myer Dies
Now over $8,000 in Bicentennial fund.
- 1985: Mrs Joyce Cowell places plaque of the tombstone of Captain
Arthur Phillip at Bathampton, England. Mr Peter Christian was appointed 7th President. Mrs
B. Lewis became the 8th Life Member. Commander Paul Kable is Vice Patron.
- 1986: Annual meeting held at Bowral. New Bi-centennial Project.
Tom Silk donates painting "The Beginning 6pm 26:01:1788". Calenders,
Christmas cards and place mats were made with the painting.
Motion for incorporation was passed.
- 1987: Annual Meeting at Gosford. Mrs Joan Cox becomes 9th Life Member, Mr Ray Meredith and Mr Len Chalmers
become the 10th and 11th Life Members.
Bi-centennial Projects are our building and commemorative plaques.
- 1988: Moved into our new building on 29:02:1988, which was opened by the Governor on 2nd July,
1988. Purchased a computer with the Government Donation of $10,000.
